In with a shot at the top…

This weekend saw Team Thomas Racing head to new territory – the hallowed tarmac of the UK’s most famous race track; Silverstone.

With the 2015 Championship past the half way mark the racing was going reach boiling point! And it certainly did that!

Steve’s weekend got off to somewhat of a bemused start… He was struggling for power and speed. During qualifying he could only manage 8th and in the first race he came home in 5th and 7th in the second. The worrying fact for Steve is that he was a good two plus seconds off the pace! This prompted the team to start looking for a problem with the truck. After a long search they discovered that the turbo housing had a crack in it. With this problem duly cured Steve could now look forward to getting back up to the sharp end of the grid on Sunday!

Sunday saw Steve and his back on form MAN race truck come home in 2nd place after a hard fought and at times, quite a rough race. In race two Steve managed bring her home in 5th after yet another hard fought and flying race.

But it was going to be the Last Chance Race that Steve would fair the worst. With a return of the Last Chance Race to a truck race meet. This saw the driver battle it out on the track for grid position for the final race of the weekend. Sadly in the first corner Steve had some contact that saw him spin off the track. This demoted him to the back of field with a fair amount of damage! This is when Steve’s well honed team swept in to action preparing the MAN truck for the Grand Final…

It’s here where everything started to change…

The Grand Final had a full grid of 23 trucks, 12 in Division 1 and 11 in Division 2. This was set to be a thrilling finale to the weekend at Silverstone! Steve was at the back and he did not disappoint…

With all kinds of jostling for position going in to Beckets Corner, the end result of this was two truck running very wide. Then two of his main rivals, Stuart Oliver and Dave Jenkins had a big shunt at the last corner and this demoted them as well as an unfortunate Oly Janes who was in second place. This gave Steve the opportunity to blast his way through in to second place down the inside of Mat Summerfield at the same corner while the carnage was still going on!!! Sadly he could not catch the flying Ryan Smith in the lead. After this Steve fought off a hard charging Mat Summerfield to come home on the second step of the podium!!

Overall a great weekend for Steve and the team as he has now closed the gap to Ryan Smith in 4th place to just 3 points. Now five drivers are in with a shout of going for the 2015 Division 1 Championship… of which Steve is firmly in that group!! The top 5 drivers are now only separated by 12 points.

Steve, as ever is keen to thank his sponsors for their continued support and faith him and his team. He would also like to extend his gratitude to his team and family for all their help in helping to get in to the position he is in!

Next it is on to the technical Norfolk track – Snetterton, over the weekend of the 19th & 20th September.

See you all there where Steve will be wanting to close further on the top position in Division 1…
